This consulting company’s new office at Ironside Newark represents more than a consolidation of its New Jersey operations—it embodies the firm’s commitment to community, collaboration, and place-based impact. Bringing together approximately 700 employees from Summit and Jersey City, the global consulting firm chose Newark’s revitalized historic freight terminal to establish a new hub in the state’s largest city. HLW’s design reimagines the 1907 warehouse as a high-performance workplace that reflects the client’s brand and embraces Newark’s industrial and cultural legacy, creating an environment that blurs the line between corporate space and community engagement.

Inspired by Newark’s identity as a historic transit hub, HLW preserved the building’s architectural character through exposed brickwork, steel columns, and train-inspired design elements. From railcar-themed collaboration booths to community-focused art curated by HLW’s brandx studio, the space celebrates local culture through works by Newark and New Jersey-based artists. These include murals, fabric art, photography, and installations that capture the spirit of Newark’s diverse communities. The workplace experience unfolds around flexible “neighborhoods,” client engagement zones, and hospitality-infused amenities like an open café, lounge areas, and an outdoor terrace, all designed to foster connection and adaptability.

Sustainability and well-being are at the core of the client’s new workplace strategy. Designed to meet LEED Gold certification, the office integrates reclaimed and locally sourced materials, reduces energy consumption by over 36%, and cuts water use by 33%. Spark Studio developed an energy-efficient, human-centric lighting plan that complements the industrial aesthetic while enhancing comfort and productivity. By transforming a historic landmark into a sustainable, community-connected headquarters, this client’s Newark office positions the firm not only as a global leader in business consulting but as an engaged partner in the city’s continued evolution.

The Newark office brings together approximately 700 colleagues to establish a unified hub in New Jersey.

Designed to meet LEED Gold certification, this new office reduces energy consumption by over 36%.

The workplace celebrates the local community with nods to Newark’s industrial and cultural legacy woven throughout the space.
