HLW at Powerful XII: Optimism + Resilience – Reflections on Design, Leadership, and the Future
In October, I had the privilege of attending Powerful XII – the Women in Architecture Conference, hosted by the AIA|LA Women in Architecture Committee at the Pacific Design Center. As an architectural designer at HLW, I’m always inspired by opportunities that challenge how we think about design’s impact on people and the planet, and this year’s theme, “Optimism + Resilience,” felt especially meaningful.
Designing with Purpose in Challenging Times
The year 2025 has tested our collective strength. From the devastating wildfires that swept through Los Angeles early in the year to the global challenges reshaping how we live and work, it’s clear that resilience is no longer optional—it’s fundamental to how we design.
Throughout the conference, a recurring idea resonated deeply with me: optimism and resilience are not just personal qualities, they’re professional imperatives. As women in architecture, we embody these traits daily. We adapt, innovate, and find clarity in complexity, designing spaces that not only endure but inspire hope and connection.

Learning from Visionary Design and Real-World Challenges
One of the most inspiring moments of the day came from Winka Dubbeldam, Principal of Archi-Tectonics, who presented her Hybrid Stadium and Concert Hall in China. Her project seamlessly blends ambition, beauty, and technical innovation—a vivid reminder of how architecture can express both resilience and optimism through form and experience.
I also participated in a workshop on climate resilience and rebuilding efforts in fire-damaged areas of Pasadena. The discussion shed light on the multifaceted recovery process—balancing legal frameworks, funding challenges, and community collaboration. What struck me most was how architects play a vital role in restoring not just buildings, but a sense of place, continuity, and belonging. It reaffirmed my belief that design, at its best, serves as both a healing and forward-looking force.

Carrying Optimism Forward
Leaving the conference, I felt both grounded and energized. The conversations, stories, and shared experiences reminded me why I chose this profession—to create environments that empower people, strengthen communities, and stand resilient in the face of change.
At HLW, we approach every project with that same mindset: to design spaces that reflect optimism, adaptability, and human connection. Events like Powerful XII reinforce how vital it is to continue supporting and learning from the women who shape the built environment with creativity, compassion, and conviction.
