“A critical skill to have is the capacity to listen—really listen to a client, teammate, or contractor and, ultimately, not miss the point. This sounds simple and perhaps somewhat clichĂ©, but it is true. The one thing clients value most of all is feeling that you are hearing and understanding what they say. Sometimes that understanding takes interpretation, but listening is where it starts. Open, honest communication can also save a lot of time and build better relationships. I believe being straight forward is the ideal, as well as the best way to find the optimal solution for all the parameters of a problem. At the end of the day, problem-solving is what we do at HLW; the problem-solving just happens to be related to finishes, architectural spaces, programs, construction methods. How well we can solve problems, how well we can use our experience to come up with a good answer to what we heard, directly correlates with how well we listened.”
