American Eagle Outfitters

American Eagle Outfitters (AEO) consolidated and restacked their New York headquarters into six floors at 401 Fifth Avenue. This strategic restack of their real estate will provide five contiguous floors that is the home of AEO’s New York Design Center. HLW’s design approach focused on achieving AEO’s cultural and functional goals, while maximizing seat count and construction budget goals.

The building, completed in 1906, is a National Historic landmark and Beaux Arts landmark designed by Stamford White, and served as the home of Tiffany & Co until 1940. The fit out is designed with contemporary details that complement the historic character of the building.

HLW provided extensive design services, including Strategy & Discovery, test fits, and full design services. The restack and extensive renovations presented unique opportunities for AEO to reestablish workplace priorities, including the ability to tailor new workplace standards to AEO’s specific needs. HLW’s workplace design responded to the need for easy access to several seasons of merchandise, a common requirement in the retail fashion industry, while maintaining an organized and easily managed approach to storage. This allowed for the workplace to benefit from the clean and uninterrupted beauty of the architecture in this significant space.
